Tardigrades: Small but Mighty

Tardigrades, also known as water bears, are some of the most extraordinary organisms on the planet. Even though they are barely visible to the naked eye, they have caught the attention of many scientists all over the world. Their strength and evolutionary importance make them an interesting subject for scientific research.

One of the main reasons scientists have recently become very interested in tardigrades is that they have an incredible resilience to extreme environmental conditions. During the cold winter months, bears enter a period of inactivity where they stay still and conserve energy. Tardigrades go through a very similar process to this, but instead of having a lower energy level, they can shut off all body processes (a state known as cryptobiosis). By entering this state, they can survive drying out, freezing, radiation, and other stresses. They can survive like this for years at a time without any water or sustenance and return to their normal state unchanged when their surroundings are more favorable. Their survival capabilities are unlike almost any others, making them a very interesting subject for scientific research. In fact, recent studies have identified tardigrade proteins that protect DNA, stabilize structures inside cells, and increase environmental tolerance even when expressed in other animals. With more knowledge about these creatures, their mechanisms could even be applied to medicine and biotechnology.


Aside from their durability, tardigrades are valuable because they can be used to study how development evolves. Their position in evolutionary trees makes them very useful for evolutionary and genetic research. Tardigrades are closely related to roundworms and fruit flies, which are two organisms that have been very useful in studying comparative biology. However, Tardigrades fill an important role since they are related to both species but are a part of their own distinct group. This allows researchers to determine which developmental genes and structures are ancient and which evolved later. For example, scientists have discovered that tardigrades are missing several genes that determine the layout of an animal’s body from head to tail. In species like roundworms and fruit flies, these genes help construct long and segmented bodies. Though in Tardigrades, their body’s layout is much simpler, which suggests that these genes were lost early on in their evolutionary history. By comparing the genetics and developmental patterns of these species, scientists can better understand how major evolutionary changes occur and how different animal forms arise.


From their ability to withstand deadly conditions to unique genetic traits, these creatures are far more than cute. Tardigrades may be small, but their impact on science is anything but that.
