Smoke From Canadian Wildfires

When I left my building a few days ago, a dense fog surrounded me, and for a second, I wasn't standing on a sidewalk in 2026. I was back in my eighth grade gymnasium, pressed against the window with my classmates. The greyish orange haze concealed all the surrounding buildings, resembling a phenomenon straight out of a movie. That was 2023. Three years later, smoke from Canadian wildfires is covering New York City again, and this time it doesn't feel like just an anomaly.
This past July, New York City experienced multiple Air Quality Health Advisories as smoke drifted south from wildfires burning across Canada. Hundreds of fires were active north of the border, and the smoke was vast enough to send a thick haze over many areas across the Eastern United States and push air quality into unhealthy territory for days. In New York, crowds were urged to stay indoors, and masks were being given out.

So why does this keep happening? Wildfires themselves aren't new or unnatural. The boreal forest that goes across most of Canada has burned seasonally for thousands of years. This fire is not alarming; it is a natural part of how the ecosystems cycle nutrients. What has changed is not the existence of fires, but the scale, amount, and intensity of them. This year's wildfire season in Canada has been especially devastating due to the unusually hot and dry climate, along with careless actions by humans. By mid July, thousands of individual fires have been reported, and the fires continue to surge across millions of acres of forest.
The deeper causes behind all of it are climate change reshaping the boreal forest itself. Canada's consul general in New York described a band of drought stretching from Texas to Minnesota affecting the boreal forest, with average temperatures roughly 10 degrees higher than normal, and up to 27 degrees higher during the harshest periods. Hotter and drier conditions cause the vegetation to dry out significantly. This change extends fire seasons and lets fires burn hotter and spread farther once they start. Because these fires are far more common and powerful than in the past decades, the smoke they produce is capable of traveling thousands of miles and settling over cities that are nowhere near the burning itself.
The spreading poses a great risk to human health. Wildfire smoke carries tiny pieces of debris known as PM2.5, particles so small they lodge deep in the lungs and can even enter the bloodstream. Short term exposure can trigger asthma attacks, coughing, and irritated eyes and throat. Longer exposure can also cause more serious health complications, such as cardiovascular and respiratory disease. While older individuals have the greatest risk, there is a misconception that healthy adults are not susceptible to these effects. However, government and health officials are speaking out to warn all citizens that even healthy people are at risk when the air quality reaches these extreme levels.
As I watched the same fog I remembered from middle school, I realized the smoke wasn't just something unusual. It is a connection from the surging fires in Canada, thousands of miles away, to the air I breathe while walking to the subway.
