Space Junk: The Growing Mess in Earth’s Orbit

Outer space is a vast and foreign place to us. Many assume that the scope of space is far too large for humans to harm or impact it in any way. Unfortunately, recent findings have demonstrated that this is not the case. Over the past few decades, remnants of satellites, rockets, and other technologies have accumulated and are now known as “space junk.” While it may not appear to be a serious issue, this body of debris is becoming a global concern that impacts communication, safety, and future space exploration.


Space junk represents any man-made object in Earth’s orbit that is no longer in use. This includes old satellites, parts of broken spacecraft, scraps from collisions, and even tiny items like chips of paint. Since objects in orbit travel at high speeds of approximately 17,500 miles per hour, they can be extremely hazardous. They travel so quickly that even the smallest pieces of waste can damage or destroy active satellites. According to NASA’s Orbital Debris Program Office, approximately 6,000 tons of space junk are currently in low Earth orbit. Additionally, the European Space Agency estimates the total mass of the waste in space is now over 11,000 tons. That is a shocking amount of garbage circling our planet. As stated, a large portion of this debris is found in low Earth orbit, the region below about 1,200 miles from the surface. This is a popular region because it’s cheaper to reach and is an ideal location for satellites that monitor weather, provide internet, or take images of Earth. It is also where the International Space Station orbits, so astronauts and resources can easily travel from Earth to the station. Because so many missions use this area, it has become the most crowded part of space.

Space Junk is not the responsibility of a particular country, but it is the result of decades of international space activity. However, there are a few countries that stand out as major contributors to the mess of space junk. For instance, the United States has launched thousands of satellites and currently tracks the highest number of materials in orbit. Also, Russia’s involvement in the space race led to decades of frequent launches, which left behind a significant amount of space debris. China has also added to the problem, especially after a 2007 anti‑satellite missile test that shattered one of its own satellites into more than 3,000 trackable pieces, according to the U.S. Space Surveillance Network. None of these countries intentionally polluted space, but remnants of their launches have accumulated over time. Space junk is not just one nation's problem: it is a global issue. Just one collision can create thousands of new particles, which can cause a chain reaction of other collisions. If this continues, certain regions of Earth’s orbit can be too cluttered and dangerous to send any more spacecraft there, threatening global communication, navigation, weather forecasting, and more.


So how can we address this issue? One suggestion is active debris removal, which utilizes robotic arms and nets to push the debris out of orbit. While this idea is promising, this technology is very expensive, and some countries fear it could be misused as a weapon to target other active satellites. Another solution is designing satellites that can leave orbit at the end of their missions, burning up safely in the atmosphere. This is a great proposal for new satellites; however, it cannot be applied to older ones that are in orbit now.


As space environmentalism grows, it demonstrates that protecting Earth’s orbit is as necessary as protecting the planet itself. Cleaning up the mess now is the only way to ensure that space remains accessible in the future.
