How Much Snow is Too Little?

One of the most understated yet vital natural resources is snowpack. During the winter, large amounts of water are stored in snowpack, and during the springtime, the frozen reservoir melts, steadily releasing water into rivers and the environment. Unfortunately, warming temperatures and different weather conditions have caused an overall decrease in snowfall. This year’s statistics show an alarmingly low amount of snowfall in many regions of the United States, leading to many concerns about water shortages and other environmental issues.


Snowpack is essential because it releases water at a slow rate. When it melts too quickly, or there is not enough snow, water runs out in the hot summer months when it is needed the most. This impacts the availability of water for drinking, agriculture, household needs, and recreational activities. The earlier melting times also dry out vegetation, which fosters the conditions for an increased and more harmful wildfire season. This poses a serious threat to ecosystems in hotter and drier climates. Another example of how the lack of snow impacts biodiversity is that some marine animals, like salmon and trout, depend on the slow snowmelt to keep the water temperatures cool. Without it, their mating cycles are disrupted, and populations decline. Additionally, less snow coverage means that more sunlight is absorbed by the land, which accelerates the warming of the Earth even further.

These effects are extremely prominent in the Colorado River Basin, which supplies water to about 40 million people across seven states and northern Mexico. This past winter, snow levels in the basin are significantly lower than expected, with some areas under 25% of their average snowpack, putting the entire system at a high risk. When there isn’t enough snow, less water flows into Lake Powell and Lake Mead, the two largest reservoirs in the country. The water levels in both of these lakes have dropped to the lowest levels ever recorded. These reservoirs supply major cities like Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles, so these recent statistics are alarming to the millions that live in these areas and depend on this water. Moreover, a large portion of the water from these lakes is allocated to farming needs in California’s Imperial Valley, one of the most productive agricultural regions in the U.S. As these environmental issues worsen, questions are raised about the threat to food security and water needs across the western United States.


The Sierra Nevada, located in California, is facing a similar crisis. With statewide snowpack at only 11% of what it normally is, California is heading into a hotter desert season with far less water stored in the mountains than it needs. This does not only mean lower reservoirs, but it also means a much higher risk of wildfires. With the limited snowfall, forests are beginning to dry out months ahead of schedule, turning the frail trees and plants into fuel for the fires. California’s forests are already stressed from years of drought, and low snowpack makes them even more vulnerable to large, fast spreading fires. This helps explain why the state has seen some of its worst fire seasons in recent years, including 2020, when more than 4 million acres burned.


The loss of snowpack across the western United States is a critical problem that needs to be recognized. This year’s data from both the Sierra Nevada and the Colorado River Basin show dangerously low levels that threaten communities and environmental health. Addressing this challenge will take a greater climate awareness and long-term adjustments to how we use and protect our resources. Even small steps in the right direction are beneficial in dealing with this matter.
